Blast from the past...Part 1

This is a tribute to all the ex/current Hong Kahlites
For those who had spent many hours of their lives...
sweating, bleeding & tearing for HKSS...
This is something to honour and remember you always
Erwan, Fazli and Afiq (2004)
Erwan, Fazli and Afiq were the spine of 2004 C Div.
They suffered alot in 2004.
Losing the West zone and Champions League semi-finals by penalties.
This group of players scored more than 100 goals in a season,
yet somehow couldn't deliver the National title in 2004.
They were finally crowned as B Div National Champion in 2006, deservedly so.
Just for update : S'pore U23 Vs Indonesia U 23
2 : 0
Fazli scored the 2nd goal !
Full details could be found at the following URL:

Straits Times (16 May 2009)
Hamzah was in tears when he knew that he was not selected for the trip to Thailand
with the AYG Soccer team.
He was so upset that he thought of quitting the AYG Soccer team.
HKSS had to convince him that he had to be patient.
He was told to continue to train hard for the AYG and not be affected.
He took the advice and continued to work hard.
Soon, he was given a chance to go for the trip to Perth with AYG.
He played his heart out and got what he deserves.

29 May 2008
By this date, HKSS was quite well known in the North Sumatra.
In Medan at least.

Straits Times (29 August 2008)

A tiny report for the last C Div title in 2008.

For HKSS, it was a long wait back in the finals.

It feels good to be back after 2 years absence.

Straits Times (17 May 2008)
Another feature from Straits Times on Afiq.
Another pleasant surprise.
Total Sport (28 May 2008)
Prior to this article, the local media had already been informed of HKSS's arrival.
This gentleman was a powerful figure in the region.
He had already assembled a strong team waiting for HKSS.
(Not that we knew then)
He was a very generous host.
The souvenir was a very expensive item.
Try as we might, Medan team was better in every way.
HKSS U14 Vs Medan U15

HKSS U14 Vs Medan U14

0 : 4
Today (16 May 2008)
It came as a pleasant surprise.
HKSS had expected older Hong Kahlites to make the grade,
not him at such a young age.
But Afiq did enough to impress the national coach we presumed.
This piece of article was shown to the parents who attended the pre-trip briefing to Medan.
HKSS players were in awe of his achievement and parents were impressed.

Penang KL trip (June 2007)
The 2nd friendly game was at Royal Selangor Club,
a high-end district to the rich and powerful.
The Soccer pitch there = S'pore Padang
Very exclusive, need to pull many strings to get in there.
We were very lucky, but we didn't know then.
HKSS U14 Vs RSC U14
2 : 2
The 3rd friendly game was a forgetable affair,
done at a public field.
Again no lines.
HKSS U14 Vs KL U14
3 : 3
Shopping at Pertaling street was good for many reasons.
HKSS had many players buying cheap watches for less than 20 ringgits.
But they still report late after shopping...arghh...
Peneng KL trip (June 2007)

The Penang trip was memorable for ...

(Roti Cenai = Roti Prata)
Penang Hill & tram

Aziz got tackled by a table in his room ...
(According to those who knew better,
he was trying to scare his room mates in the dark by pretending to be ghost.
We all knew what happened next)

HKSS U14 vs Penang U15 State team

HT : HKSS 1 : Penang 3
FT : HKSS 1 : Penang 10

It was indeed a long afternoon.
Not before HKSS stuns Penang with a long range cracking free kick,
near the centre circle by Ibrahim.

Soccer Camp (June, 2006)
It used to be a unique feature in HKSS Soccer Club.
Team bonding, esprit de corp etc
For a short period, everyone just treat each other as brothers.
Players suffer together.
The night walk in 2005 past the CCK graveyard was the most talked about activity,
years after the 2005 Soccer camp was over.
2006 batch did a more friendly tree-top walk instead.
The Thailand trip was a culture shock for many.
Supanburi Sports School showed
HKSS the depth of Soccer talents in Thailand.
For the past few years,
it was always friendly game followed by goodbye without socialising.
This time,
the Supanburi Sports School principal made sure all the players had dinner together.
It was a mass dinner in the school hall,
with Karaoke and traditional Thai dance.
The principal himself got the ball rolling by singing and leading the Thai dance.
Soon, their teachers were singing and dancing too.

In the end, it was hard to say goodbye.
C Div Sec 2s (2007)
Some very interesting players.
Some of these players just couldn't sustain the interest long enough.
This batch that did not fulfill their huge potential.
HKSS were still West Zone Champions in 2007.
HKSS almost qualified for Champions League semi-final.
(3W 3D 1L = 12pts was not too bad a record but not good enough for a top 4 spot)
It did, however, laid the foundation for a stunning 2008 batch.
The disappointment of missing top 4 after losing 1 match the entire season was bad.
It almost got worse after the final game in the season ended.
HKSS was never known to be a troublemaking school in Soccer.
It stayed that way.
2007 was a very stressful season for many reasons.
It was a slow recovery process for HKSS after never in contention for top 4 in 2006.
The rebuilding process from the high of 2005 to the low of 2006 was difficult.
The team in 2007 did not truely believe they could do it.
The next team did.
C Div players from 2004...
saying farewell in 2006.

C Div players (2004)
Many players had a older brother or sister from HKSS.

C Div School team (2005)
An interesting group of players.
West Zone Champions and Champions League runner-up.
Alot of came-from-behind matches were won in 2005.
HT : HKSS 1 TSS 3
FT : HKSS 4 TSS 3
HKSS seemed dead and burried at half-time.
It's not not over yet...Someone forgot to tell TSS.
The coach from TSS couldn't quite believe that his team had lost at full time.
TSS had a commanding lead at half time,
that lead was chipped off little by little till it was all gone.
West Zone Semi-final
HT : HKSS 1 WSSS 0
FT : HKSS 4 WSSS 3
(This match was not as straight forward as the scoreline suggests,
WSSS were leading twice 2-1, then 3-2 in the second half.
At 3-3, many thought it was going into extra time or penalty.
Then, the all improtant 4th goal for HKSS came.
With less than 5 min of play left, HKSS scored with a header from a corner)
Champions League Final (Tampines Stadium)
HT : HKSS 1 : SSS 0
FT : HKSS 1 SSS 2
HKSS was the first team to score against SSS in the Champions League Final,
the ONLY school to have done that in the history of Champions League Final, twice.
To concede a penalty was bad,
to concede 2 penalties in a final was unbelievable.
Till this day,
players who were involved in that match had their own versions of the penalties.
That's Football for you.
The KL trip was an eye opener.
The stadium that was promised never came.
HKSS played in a school field, without lines !
The referees were teacher coach form Victoria School,
the best Sports School in that region.
The quality of their players showed and HKSS did not get any favours.
Their players were truely agressive but fair,
Victoria School coaches had an iron grip on them.

Straits Times (April 2004)
Japanese Club Albirex Niigata donated their team of the month award cheque to HKSS.
Their star players such as Wakui had a 5-a-side indoor Soccer with our C Div players.
HKSS had a disappointing season.
Both C and B Div were National 4th though.
At least one of the team was expected to make the finals.
It was also the ONLY time that both teams were placed in the top 4.
The Maleka trip was less interesting than the Kluang trip in many ways.
But the accomadation was much better.
HKSS played in KUBU stadium in Maleka for friendly games,
not in some school field.

Streats (5 September 2003)

Zulhilmi was a little warrior.
Dribbling through injuries and pain,
he would not want to miss a single game.
As his coach, it was difficult to leave him out.
As a captain, he commands respect from the rest.
Alot of smart substitution/rotation had been put in place.
He did not burnt out and finished 2003 National Finals as MOM.
The overseas trip to Kluang, Malaysia was still remembered fondly by many.
The over-priced Kluang Addidas, the houseflies, the group songs etc
It made many players wanting to work hard to experience an overseas trip again.
